History State Report
Week 10
May 18 - May 22
- If you haven't done so, put your state report masterpiece together. Here's a brief video tutorial on how to assemble all your work.
- Personal Interest report - (optional-extra credit) was due yesterdayThursday 5/28. If you are still working on it finish it up and send it to me. Better late than never.
- Final State Report - was due Tuesday 5/26. I have received several fabulous reports the past few days. Many more still need to be sent. Better late than never.

Thursday, May 21:
- Thanks to everyone for making yesterday's State Report conference's a successful and productive day.
- Finishing up your state report continues to be the priority these next few days. The goal is to have it done by Tuesday May 26. We've talked about a Monday deadline, but as it turns out Monday is a holiday. Considering our distant learning situation and our school calendar, you won’t be physically turning in your report. There’s not enough time. Tuesday each of you will simply hold up your final polished report, flip through a few pages and tell me a few things about your state and the report.

Week 9: May 11 - May 15
Friday:
- The plan was to have your first draft completed today. Stay on target. You've done a great job in planning the work, now it's time to work the plan. You can do it!
- As we discussed:
- The first draft does not have to be hand written. Typing it is perfectly ok.
- Don't worry about making your rough draft perfect. Just write it. It's not suppose to be polished perfect. That's why it's called a rough draft.
- E-mail me a copy of your first draft, OR include a copy of it in Monday’s drop off work folder. PLEASE keep a copy of it for yourself.
- Bring your questions, comments, and progress today. We will discuss all this and more today.
- The gathering and organizing of notes for your history paper is nearly complete. The task of writing is soon to begin. Read this Reference Guide for your history report before you start writing.
- Hopefully by now you’ve had a chance to view the state report lesson and have begun the important work. Please watch it before class if you haven’t. The video should explain what we are doing and how we are going to do it. I've put suggested checkpoints of where you should be each day to stay on target to finish by the end of the week. We will discuss this today in class. Come prepared with your work, questions and effort.
- Seal & Flag : Final draft. Polish it up and make it look AWESOME. Your state seal and flag rough draft was returned to you last week in the “Old Work” folder or envelope. It was included with the work that needed to be corrected and/or completed. Most of you either have this done or just need to revise it a little and type it up. As the example I use in the video shows, the State Seal & Flag write-up should not be a long report. It should be a very short report.
- History paper: Thursday/Friday is our goal to have a completed rough draft. "Mr. Hill, do I have to hand write the rough draft?" A: ...No you do not. I do need to see a rough first draft hand written or typed that we will then revise, and edit.
- Phase 1: Plan the Work
- Create notes (Monday/Tuesday): 7-8 facts from each section
- Organize notes (Tuesday/Wednesday): Put notes in order of priority you want to write, (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.)
- Phase 2: Work the Plan
- Write, write, and write (Tuesday/Wednesday): Introduction - Body - Conclusion
- Revise, repair re-write (Wednesday/Thursday)
- Phase 1: Plan the Work
- Personal Interest: I explained this briefly in the video. The priority right now is the history paper, but start thinking about a topic you'd like to write about. We'll work on this next week.
State Reports: Using your library books and the myriad of on-line resources, start researching the history of your fabulous state. Find at least one on-line resource and 1-2 books you like and want to use for your report. Continue learning about the history of your state from the books and on-line resources you have. We will begin the writing process for your history paper after Easter vacation.
